Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque: Magnificent Beauty

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Bandar Seri Begawan

This was actually the first time that I visited an Islamic mosque so I was ecstatic and at the same time giddy upon seeing the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque.

Located right between Kampung Ayer and downtown Bandar Seri Begawan, the mosque is probably one of the most famous landmarks in Brunei and features an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture. It has a bridge across an artificial lagoon to Kampong Ayer in the middle of the river and another marble bridge that leads to a barge. At first I thought it was a real ship or some kind of religious vessel but it was actually a replica.

Upon reaching the mosque, we were greeted by an old man who seems to be guarding the place. I remember I was wearing a keffiyeh that time and since it was my first time to be in an Islamic country, I asked him if it's ok to wear one and he just answered "good fashion". He was actually very friendly and accomodating. There was even this one funny moment when we told him that we were from the Philippines. He asked us who was our current president and we just answered "Aquino" and he said, "Oh Cory!"

Before entering the mosque we were asked to remove our shoes and wear a black robe. Cameras and bags are not allowed inside the mosque so we had to leave them at the main hall. We were in awe observing this beautiful architecture as the interiors are elaborately decorated. And in case you were wondering, yes the main dome is covered in pure gold. If you love taking pictures then this religious site is definitely the place to be when you're at Bandar Seri Begawan. I would suggest that you go to the left side of the mosque facing the lagoon and the barge because that is the best vantage point.
